Chapter 7

Wednesday, January 12

Richard Collins opened the front door, giving Ezekiel and the older man with him a strange look. “Ezekiel,” he said with a nod of his head in greeting. “This is mighty harsh weather to be paying a casual visit.”

Ezekiel nodded his head in agreement. “Yeah, it is, but this is no casual visit.”

“Yeah, I had that feeling in my gut,” he sighed, stepping to the side to allow the other two in the entrance hall, wondering to himself what Ruben had been up to this time. “Please, come on in. It’s way too cold outside to remain standing on the porch for long.”

“Well, I have to agree with you there, Sir,” Ezekiel chuckled.

“Mrs. Morrison,” Mr. Collins said, turning to his housekeeper, who had just appeared from down the hall. “We’ll be in the parlor. Please, send us some hot coffee in. I’m sure these gentlemen would like to warm up in front of the fireplace.”

Rather than immediately doing as directed, the woman crossed her arms in front of her and glared at Ezekiel. “Why would you want to associate with any of them Townsends after what they did? Interfering in the election for sheriff the way they did. They cost Ruben the position.”

He snorted, shaking his head at her. “They saved the town from being strong-armed into voting for Ruben. I know you labor under the same delusions as my wife, but my son, unfortunately, is not the angel you think he is.”

“No, he’s not,” Mr. Crabtree mumbled under his breath.

Mrs. Morrison turned, glaring at the man like she’d like to scratch his eyes out. “What do you know of it?” she hissed in his direction. “You’re…”

“Alright, that will be quite enough,” Mr. Collins said in a near roar. “You will not be permitted to be so rude to my guests. One more insolent word for either of them or myself, and you will be fired. Do you understand me?”

“But, Sir, I’ve worked for you for almost thirty-five years,” she whispered, her eyes dropping to the floor.

He let her stand there for several tense seconds, wringing her hands before finally answering. “Maybe so,” he said with a nod. “But I will no longer tolerate having to defend myself when I punish Ruben. Or your being rude to guest because he has you wrapped around his little finger. I’m not wrapped around his finger, and I see him for what he really is.”

“Well…”

“No,” he snapped with a shake of his head. “Ruben ordered his men to go to town on the day of the election and harass the voters. The only thing the Townsends done, was stop them, allowing the citizens of Sapphire Springs to vote in peace. And the way they wanted to. Farther more, that worthless son of mine has no business trying to be sheriff of anything. I can assure you, his only interest in the position was what he could get out of it. Not the safety of the town and it’s citizen. Unlike Johnathan Carter, who has experience at the job and truly cares for the safety of the town.
